Mitsui O.S.K. Lines is developing floating data centers by converting used ships, drawing power from a dedicated powership, the grid or offshore wind, with seawater as the cooling sink and submarine fibre to shore. Its programmes with Kinetics/Karpowership and with Hitachi target tens of megawatts of AI-capable capacity. Design and partnership work was complete by 2026 but its first commercial floating data center is still planned for 2027 or later.
Ecosystem functionJapan's leading shipowner entrant, and the only one reusing existing vessels rather than building purpose-built platforms — a much cheaper path if it works.
