Thales Alenia Space, a Thales and Leonardo joint venture, led the European Commission's ASCEND consortium studying orbital data centers powered by several-hundred-megawatt solar arrays, cooled passively and linked to the ground only optically. The 2024 feasibility study concluded the concept works technically and economically only if launch emissions and costs fall roughly tenfold. No hardware exists; the roadmap points at a proof-of-concept around 2031 and a first operational facility in the mid-2030s.
Ecosystem functionEurope's state-sanctioned answer to privately funded US and Chinese orbital compute, optimising for sovereignty and carbon accounting rather than speed to orbit.
